20. The Office

I have mentioned that Mrs. Draper eventually became full time secretary. The secretary when I arrived was Miss Aitken, quite soon followed by Miss Aisleworth. A fairly long-running secretary was Miss Mary Cameron. At the time I left, there was a much younger one, Miss Touie. The office always gave an impression of order and efficiency. Miss Cameron was the only one of these I got to know to some extent, since she liked coming to concerts. Later, in their retirement, she, Betty Rayment and Effie Devenish went on holidays together. She had a kind smile, but an eagle eye for any mistakes in claims for a refund.
