11. Not a nice subject
Given the muck that has emerged in recent years concerning abuse at boarding schools, I feel I should put it on record that, during my years at Caldecott, to the best of my knowledge, nothing of this sort occurred. I also believe that, for as long as Miss Leila was effectively in control, she would have instinctively perceived if a prospective member of staff had dubious motives for wishing to work with children. Reports from later Caldecott history suggest there may have been incidents that were not taken sufficiently seriously. I hope that, if any allegations emerge, even if a proper investigation is impossible after so many years, they will not be brushed aside as fantasies.
