These words up in the Caldecott classroom shown in the Annual Report for 1913-14 (also a photo in the 1914-15 one) were from the last line of a longish poem by John Masefield (1878-1967) favoured by Leila Rendel and other well-off ladies of her generation. The poem 'Biography' was written about the time that Caldecott Nursery was established in 1911. It was included in a 1912 anthology of poems 'Georgian Poetry 1911-1912'. The last lines are:

 

Best trust the happy moments. What they gave

Makes man less fearful of the certain grave,

And gives his work compassion and new eyes.

The days that make us happy make us wise.
