Shumlin was 75 when he undertook the job with Sol Hurok's company and he looked it. His wife, Diane, was responsible for many foul ups during the tour, including attempting to swindle the musicians out of about $200 per month per musician in wages. However, the San Francisco American Federation of Musicians soon straightened out Diane Shumlin and Hurok Concerts because these are the same people who allowed us to work in America in the first place. Hurok had scheduled the Bolshoi Ballet for tour in 1975, and they didn't want Union problems because of Diane Shumlin's reprehensible money-juggling antics.
